Overview

Updated information is available for 14 measures of health care usage at the local level across Australia, including Primary Health Network (PHN) areas and Statistical Areas Level 3 (SA3), for 2014–15.

These measures include the average number of GP, after-hours GP and specialist attendances per person, expenditure on GP and specialist attendances, and the percentage of bulk-billed GP attendances. The average number of GP attendances in aged care homes (per person) has also been updated for 2013–14 and 2014–15. The findings are based on the Department of Human Services Medicare Benefits Statistics 2014–15.

The data reveal in 2014–15:

  • Across PHN areas, people living in Northern Territory PHN area saw a GP on average 3.9 times compared with people living in South Western Sydney PHN area, who saw a GP on average 7.7 times
  • The national average number of after-hours GP attendances was 0.43 per person. Across PHN areas, this ranged from 0.13 per person in Murrumbidgee (NSW) PHN area to 0.76 in Western Sydney PHN area.
  • The average amount spent by Medicare on GP visits ranged from $204 per person in Northern Territory PHN area to $354 per person in South Western Sydney PHN area. Also, the average amount spent by Medicare on GP after-hours visits ranged from almost $8 per person in Murrumbidgee (NSW) PHN area to $54 per person in Gold Coast (Qld) PHN area
  • The percentage of bulk-billed GP attendances ranged from 57.9% in Australian Capital Territory PHN area to 96.3% in Western Sydney PHN area.
