This Technical Supplement summarises the methods used to calculate descriptive statistics presented in Healthy Communities: Hospitalisations for mental health conditions and intentional self-harm in 2013–14 (the report).

The report provides information on the following measures:

  • Age-standardised rates of mental health overnight hospitalisations
  • Age-standardised rates of mental health overnight bed days
  • Age-standardised rates of intentional self-harm hospitalisations
  • Age-standardised rates of intentional self-harm bed days.

The report has published information using admitted patient data from the National Hospital Morbidity Database 2013–14.

The report publishes statistics for 31 Primary Health Network areas and 333 Statistical Areas Level 3, as defined by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
